Bled Castle - according to written sources, the oldest castle in Slovenia, first mentioned with a donation in 1011 as Castellum Veldes. On a mighty steep rock that rises 130 m above the glacial Lake Bled, stands the symbol of Bled and Slovenia - Bled Castle. The image of the castle above the lake with a romantic islet and a church is the characteristic of Bled that has become recognizable at home and in the world over the centuries. From the viewing terraces of the castle, there is an extraordinary view of the lake with the island, the land with Lesca and Radovljica in the palm of your hand, and the mountainous world of the Karavanki and the Julian Alps. More than a thousand years have passed, it was on April 10, 1004, since the German king Henry II in Trent, Italy. donated the property of Bled in Carniola to Bishop Albuin of Brixen and his diocese. In 1011, Emperor Henry II. with a new donation to Albuin's successor, Adalberon, also donated a castle on the cliff (Castellum Veldes), which is first mentioned in this second donation in preserved written sources. Bled Castle was the administrative center of the Brixen land holding in Gorenjska. In medieval sources, the name Bled is mentioned in the German form veldes. Bled Castle is the oldest castle in Slovenia in terms of its mention. The castle buildings are arranged next to the lower and upper courtyards. Prominent travelers spread the word about the beauties of Bled and the castle, including Janez Vajkard Valvasor in Slava Vojvodina Kranjska from 1689. With its favorable strategic location, Bled represented an important scene of diplomatic and protocol in all periods of history meetings at the highest level. Many of the most prominent statesmen visited Bled Castle and enjoyed a unique view of the surrounding beauties. In the baroque part of the castle building, the museum takes visitors through the eventful history of Bled from the first settlers onwards.
