The museum has its premises in a bourgeois villa on the corner of Mladinska and Ulica heroja Tomšič, which was built in the mid-1990s by the Maribor entrepreneur Scherbaum. It is a historical museum that deals with the museological and historiographical treatment of the recent history of northeastern Slovenia.

The museum boasts interesting and rich museum collections, and the museum photo library is also extremely rich, which houses many documentary photos and negatives, as well as a lot of video and audio material. The specialty of the museum is the archive with more than 120 running meters of material from the Second World War.

The Maribor National Liberation Museum was the first in Slovenia to introduce the post of pedagogue curator. The museum's pedagogical service is one of the pillars of museum activity by working with visitors. It offers young visitors a variety of programs - from classic exhibition tours, creative workshops, nights in a museum, to preparation for graduation and lessons. With their rich pedagogical and andragogic programs, they attract more visitors to the museum every year.

In the museum, during a walk through the permanent exhibition, visitors learn about the history of Maribor in the 20th century. They can walk through industrial Maribor, the period of the fighting for the northern border, they can meet General Rudolf Maistro, admire the flourishing of Slovenian Maribor in the period between the First and Second World Wars and sympathize with the fate of the people of Maribor during the Second World War. Along with the permanent exhibition, many occasional exhibitions are available to visitors. When setting them up, they cooperate a lot with related institutions in Slovenia and abroad.

They are open from Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Closed on Sundays and holidays, except for pre-announced groups. They open a museum for them at any time.
