The National Museum of Slovenia, which was founded as the Provincial Museum for Carniola by the Carniola Provincial Estate almost 200 years ago, on October 15, 1821, is the oldest Slovenian museum institution. The famous institution is divided into six professional departments, whose employees collect, document, preserve, research and present museum objects to the public. The central task of the museum is certainly to educate and inform the public about the history of Slovenian space and Slovenian cultural heritage in an attractive, sovereign and popular way. With this, we awaken Slovenian national consciousness and proudly keep pace with other European museums. The museum has, thanks to its employees, who have in-depth knowledge in certain professional fields, the status of a research institution and participates in some scientific research programs. With presentations of museum material (in the form of professional and popular publications and exhibitions), we shed light on individual segments of the history of today's Slovenian space. By digitizing the material and building an electronic database on the museum objects we keep, we join related European institutions, which make cultural heritage even more accessible with the help of modern information technologies.
