The beginnings of the establishment of the Koper museum date back to 1910, when the Committee for the Establishment of the City Museum for History and Art in Koper (Museo Civico di Storia e d'Arte) was constituted on October 1, and the municipal council adopted a decision at the end of October About the establishment of a museum. The museum officially came to life on March 18, 1911, when the municipal council approved its statute and elected the museum leadership. The museum first got two rooms in the former monastery of St. Klare, and after the First World War, the municipality restored the Belgramoni-Tacco Palace for its museum activity, where the museum's headquarters are still today.

According to its mission, the Koper Provincial Museum is a museum that, in accordance with the rules and goals of the museum profession, takes care of movable cultural heritage and presents it to the widest circle of the public and groups with special needs. The substantive field of activity covers archeology, history, art and cultural history, and the ethnology of cultural heritage.
