ZOO Ljubljana

The Ljubljana Zoo was founded in 1949. The first cages were placed in the center of Ljubljana. In 1951, however, it moved to its current area - the southwestern part of Rožnik, where it occupies 19.6 ha of area and has 6.5 km of walking paths. Around 200,000 visitors visit us every year. Since 1988, we have been developing as a modern zoo. For each animal, we arrange as natural a place as possible, which contains everything that a certain animal needs: a place for sleeping, sunbathing, bathing, defecating, observing, hiding and varies from species to species. We grow the native fauna of Slovenia and some non-native representatives of amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. The institute carries out the activity of keeping animals of wild indigenous and non-native species and domestic animals with the aim of showing animals to the public, within the framework of which the educational activity of showing animals is highlighted. The mission of zoos 1. The nature conservation role is more important every day. Our ZOO helps to preserve 13 species of animals that are on the list of endangered species of the European breeding program - EEP (eg: giraffe, zebra, Indian elephant, Siberian tiger,...). Potentially endangered native species are: big hamster, otter, beaver. It is about preserving individual species as their living environment. 2. The educational role is the most prominent today. It is not possible to get a realistic idea of animals on television and from books and learn about their behavior. The animals in the zoo are alive, visitors can observe them from close range. We enable genuine, close contact with domesticated wild and domestic animals. He can only love what a person knows - and also preserve. 3. Tourist, cultural and recreational role. Our country has more and more tourists, and a visit to the zoo certainly belongs to the offer. 4. Scientific research role. We cooperate with different faculties, in various fields, within the framework of our ability we help with various researches.
