Velika Planina

Velika planina is a high mountain plateau in the foothills of the Kamnik-Savinjske Alps, where it is the best-preserved shepherd's settlement in Europe.

The most common and also the fastest is the access by cable car Nihalka from Kamniška Bistrica, where there is also an arranged parking lot. When we reach the top, we can take a two-seater to Gradišče, from where a wonderful view of the shepherd's village awaits us just a little further, and on the opposite side to the high peaks (Grintovec, Skuta, Brana, Ojstrica, Planjava, Lučka Baba, Kamniška sedlo).

There are about 140 huts on the mountain and all of them are made according to the plans of the elders of the Velikoplanin Bajtars, architect Vlast Kopač. The rich alpine flora of grassy slopes and karst basins, as well as larch stormtroopers and spruces create a fairy-tale landscape suitable for a day trip. On the plateau, we can rest at the chapel of Mary of the Snow and descend into the Vetrnica cave, which is accessible via a narrow circular path. There are basically two caves here, Mala and Velika Vetrnica, which are connected by a natural bridge. They are the consequences of the limestone world, where snow is still retained in the summer months. On the western edge of the plateau (Green Edge) there is a picturesque natural window Luknja. There are several mountain lodges on the plateau: Domžalski dom on Velika planina, Dom na Mali planina, Zeleni rob...

In winter, there is a well-maintained ski resort on the mountain, which offers us the winter beauty of the plateau and affordable skiing.
