City Museum of Ljubljana

City Museum of Ljubljana is the capital’s main historical museum. It is dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage of the Ljubljana region from prehistoric times to the present day. The museum houses over 200,000 artefacts, including, at 5,200 years old, the oldest wooden wheel and axle in the world.

The City Museum has occupied Auersperg Palace, the former residence of the Counts of Auersperg, for 80 years. With its wonderful atrium and courtyard, the palace’s architectural distinction strikes you as soon as you enter.

Just how special the location is becomes apparent when you descend into the museum basement, which houses archaeological remnants found on site: the Roman road and a bread oven from Emona, medieval pottery, an Early Modern waterwell, and a treasure trove of current archaeological finds from Ljubljana.

The entire first floor of the museum is dedicated to temporary exhibitions, while the second contains the striking permanent exhibition, Faces of Ljubljana, which presents the Slovenian capital as a commercial, political, administrative and creative centre by theme and period.

The City Museum of Ljubljana is part of MGML (Museums and Galleries of Ljubljana), the largest city institution operating in the field of heritage and the visual arts. In addition to the City Museum, MGML is also responsible for the City Art Museum, the Jakopič Gallery, Gallery Vžigalica, Bežigrad Galleries 1 and 2, the Tobačna 001 Cultural Centre, the Plečnik House, Emona Archaeological Park and RogLab.
