The mission of the public institution is to take care of the recognition, preservation, presentation, and understanding of the living and movable cultural and natural heritage of the Gornjesava region and the mountain and iron heritage of the wider Slovenian area. It performs its mission on the basis of collections from the following areas:

• history iron industry and mining with technical heritage and related activities,
• History of Slovenian mountaineering and related activities (Slovenian Mountain Museum in Mojstrana),
• urban and local cultural history the entire Upper Sava region,
• ethnology bearers of the aforementioned activities and residents of the Upper Sava region,
• geology and paleontology Upper Sava regions.
